Today, many people are hard-pressed to find the time to watch movies, thus opting for streaming. For those who still want their DVD or Blu-ray fix, however, disc-based formats are still available. If you haven't already seen Bad Boys 2 on DVD or Blu-ray yet, this release features 720p resolution and Dolby DTS surround sound. The film also has an English 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track with optional subtitles in English SDH & Spanish for all dialogue scenes (but not titles). The film is a widescreen presentation, in the 2.38:1 aspect ratio. The image quality is not quite top notch but it is still a big step up from the original DVD release. In terms of audio, the disc's Dolby Digital surround track isn't as impressive as one might expect from a modern action movie. In fact, it seems that much of the action scenes in Bad Boys 2 were recorded in stereo rather than surround sound. The rear channels also have a habit to distort during scenes with extreme action or high sound levels. The dialog is often hard to hear, but the film's score rarely overpowers the dialogue. The 7.1 Dolby Digital mix also feels like it's missing something. Nevertheless, the low-end punch is strong; explosions, especially those at the beginning of each act, make quite an impact with thumping bass and rumbling subwoofer low frequencies. Commentary tracks are included on both discs with director Michael Bay (also providing an audio commentary) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer (providing an audio commentary). There are also two featurettes: one with "Bad Boys 2" title designer Jeff Most (1:46) and one with Bad Boys 2 stunt coordinator Scott Sakamoto (2:44). The film has been released on Blu-ray on January 27, 2009. It is not perfect, but it's certainly worth picking up the disc if you are a fan of the first movie. While some have complained that this means it's more violent, others have stated that this makes for an even better movie because it more authentically portrays New York City as a dangerous place where cops are just one step ahead of killers.
